Chemical Peels

Skin Resurfacing Through Chemical Peels

A chemical peel is a minimally invasive non-surgical anti-aging treatment, which is ideally suited for patients looking for natural-looking skin rejuvenation. Chemical peels involve the application of a special chemical solution on the skin, which causes the top layers of the skin to exfoliate or peel off. As a result, shriveled or wrinkled areas of the skin will shed and new skin grows in their place.  The choice of chemical peels will depend on the intensity of the treatment required. Deeper peels may be necessary if the patient is looking for more dramatic outcomes. However, the risk, pain, and recovery period is likely to be proportional to the strength of the chemical treatment sought.

Recovery
Recovery period in case of chemical peels depends on the type of chemical peel used and the depth and extent of the treatment. It is critically important to follow post-procedure care instructions given by the plastic surgeon. Healing will speed up with proper skin care, and the risk of infections and color changes in the affected area will be minimized. Sun exposure should be avoided for at least six months to a year following the chemical peel treatment. In any case, sun screen protection should be used even beyond the recovery period.
