How Do Dermal Fillers Work?

Dermal fillers are injectable gel-like substances that are FDA approved to correct wrinkles and restore lost volume.1 Most fillers, including Restylane and Juvederm, are made with a hypoallergenic synthetic form of hyaluronic acid, which is a substance that is found naturally in the body. Dermal fillers work to smooth and plump the skin. Depending on the type of filler and the placement of the injection, they can soften lines, augment lips, contour facial features, or add lift to skin.

Treatment with dermal fillers is typically quick and painless with no downtime needed. At Prince Plastic Surgery, you will be offered topical numbing cream to minimize any discomfort. You will be able to see your results right away and results will last six months to one year.

Natural Looking Wrinkle Treatment with Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers are excellent for combatting early signs of aging such as nasolabial folds (smile lines between the edge of the nose and the corners of the mouth) and marionette lines (wrinkles between the corners of the mouth and the chin). They can also replace lost volume around the cheekbones to give a more youthful look. When administered by an expert injector, dermal fillers can provide completely natural-looking rejuvenation that allows you to look like a refreshed, well rested version of yourself.

Dr. Prince’s expertise always ensures that my Botox and lip filler look
natural, making me look refreshed, like I just returned from a week at
the beach. There is nobody else in central AR that I would trust to put
a needle in my face, and her bedside manner is always friendly and professional.

Lip Augmentation with Dermal Fillers

If your lips are naturally thin, or if you have noticed age-related loss of lip volume, dermal fillers can give you a lovely plump pout! Certain fillers, such as Restylane Kysse and Juvederm Volbella, are specially formulated for non-surgical lip augmentation. These lip fillers can deliver full, soft, natural-looking results.

Jawline Contouring with Dermal Fillers

If you have always dreamed of a stronger or more defined jawline, dermal fillers can be used to enhance and contour your jaw. With strategically placed injections, our dermal filler experts can diminish the appearance of early jowls and create the appearance of a slimmer jaw.

Non-Surgical Chin Augmentation

If you are self-conscious about a weak or receding chin, dermal fillers can help bring balance to your profile. Chin enhancement with injectable dermal fillers is an effective and minimally invasive treatment to improve the shape of the chin without implants or surgery.

Nasolabial Fold Treatment

Nasolabial folds, or smile lines, are the natural creases that run from the outer nose to the corners of the mouth. Deepening nasolabial folds are a visible sign of aging, but one that is easily corrected with injectable dermal fillers.  If you are bothered by deep nasolabial folds, dermal fillers can plump and smooth them to restore a youthful look.

Frequently Asked Questions About Dermal Fillers
  • Which dermal filler is best for me?

That depends on many factors, including your areas of concern and your goals. Our Nurse Injectors are experienced with a full range of dermal fillers; during your consultation appointment, they will discuss your options and create a dermal filler treatment plan that is personalized to meet your needs.

  • Do dermal fillers hurt?

Every patient has a different pain threshold, but most people find dermal filler injections to be a quick, relatively painless procedure. Some areas are more sensitive than others and you may feel a slight pinch, but we will provide topical numbing cream to make sure your experience is as comfortable as possible.

Dr. Prince, Kim, and Angela will spend time discussing your goals and analyzing your facial structure to ensure that you get the results you want. Our patients regularly report that they get compliments on how great they look, but no one can tell they have fillers.

  • Are dermal fillers safe?

We only use dermal fillers that are FDA approved and clinically tested for safety. Potential risks of dermal fillers include bleeding, bruising, or allergic reaction.2 Our Nurse Injectors are overseen by Board Certified Plastic Surgeon Dr. Melanie Prince and our entire team prioritizes patient safety.

  • Are dermal fillers permanent?

No, but the results can last up to 1 year. If you are unhappy with your dermal filler results for any reason, the hyaluronic acid fillers that we use can be dissolved with a simple injection.

  • What can I expect from dermal filler recovery?

Generally, there is no downtime needed after dermal filler treatment, but you may want to refrain from strenuous activity in order to prevent swelling.3 Some patients experience mild redness, bruising, or swelling, but these side effects are temporary and usually resolve quickly.

  • Am I a candidate for dermal fillers?

If you would like an effective non-surgical treatment to smooth wrinkles, restore lost facial volume, plump lips, or contour facial features, then dermal fillers could be right for you! Ideal candidates are over 18 and in good general health.

  • How should I prepare?

To prepare for your dermal fillers, avoid medications that will thin the blood for 10 days prior to your appointment. Common over the counter types include ibuprofen, Midol, Excedrin, and aspirin. Avoid heavy drinking the night prior to your appointment. Taking Arnica pill supplements can help to minimize bruising.
